Summer is the peak season for construction projects, and pile driving projects are no exception. However, the extreme weather conditions in summer, such as high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and intense sunlight, pose significant challenges for construction machinery.
Some key points for the summer maintenance of pile drivers have been summarized for this issue.
01. Conduct inspections in advance
Before the summer, conduct a comprehensive inspection and maintenance of the entire hydraulic system of the pile driver, with a focus on checking the gearbox, hydraulic oil tank, and cooling system. Inspect the quality, quantity, and cleanliness of the oil, and replace it if necessary. Pay attention to checking the coolant level during the construction process and monitor the water temperature gauge. If the water tank is found to be low on water, stop the machine immediately and wait for it to cool down before adding water. Be careful not to open the water tank cover immediately to avoid scalding. The gear oil in the pile driver gearbox must be the brand and model specified by the manufacturer, and should not be replaced arbitrarily. Strictly follow the manufacturer's requirements for the oil level and add the appropriate gear oil based on the size of the hammer.
02.Minimize the use of dual-flow (secondary vibration) as much as possible when pile driving.
It is preferable to use single-flow (primary vibration) as much as possible because frequent use of dual-flow results in greater energy loss and higher heat generation. When using dual-flow, it is best to limit the duration to no more than 20 seconds. If the pile driving progress is slow, it is advisable to periodically pull out the pile by 1-2 meters and utilize the combined force of the pile driving hammer and excavator to provide auxiliary impacts over the 1-2 meters, making it easier for the pile to be driven in.
03.Regularly check for vulnerable and consumable items.
The radiator fan, fixed clamp bolts, water pump belt, and connecting hoses are all vulnerable and consumable items. After prolonged use, the bolts may loosen and the belt may deform, resulting in a decrease in transmission capacity. The hoses are also subject to similar issues. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly inspect these vulnerable and consumable items. If loose bolts are found, they should be tightened in a timely manner. If the belt is too loose or if there is aging, rupture, or damage to the hoses or sealing components, they should be replaced promptly.
Timely Cooling
The scorching summer is a period when the failure rate of construction machinery is relatively high, especially for machinery operating in environments exposed to intense sunlight. If conditions allow, excavator operators should park the pile driver in a shaded area promptly after completing the work or during breaks, which helps to rapidly reduce the temperature of the pile driver's casing. However, it is important to note that under no circumstances should cold water be used to directly wash the casing for cooling purposes.
Pile drivers are prone to malfunctions in hot weather, so it is necessary to maintain and service the equipment well, improve its performance, and promptly adapt to high temperatures and working conditions.
